PFA & SBT

Do you have a child with severe problem behaviours such as self-injurious behaviours, property destruction or other behaviours that are currently causing a negative impact on your family life? Having a child with Autism or other Developmental Disability can affect the way that a family will function. It can cause stress, frustration and cause you to stay in your home because you may not want others to judge you or your child in public during a behaviour.

At Bright Start Academy, we work directly with children and youth on managing behaviours. We work directly with students and their family to understand why the problem behaviour occur and the consequences that are occurring to maintain the behaviours. In the early stages we teach effective communication strategies to assist in reducing maladaptive behaviours. Then we shape the communication efforts to be more developmentally age appropriate. Continued training will allow us to teach these children/youth how to tolerate delays and denials of activities and/or materials.

The work of Dr. Greg Hanley on PFA and SBT (Practical Functional Assessments and Skills Based Training), has provided us the opportunity to facilitate programming with our students. Here is a link that demonstrates and explains the effectiveness of using Dr. Gregory Hanley’s approach to behaviours. Click here for more information.

Sessions run 1 to 2 hours unless otherwise stated. A child must attend a minimum of 3 sessions per week. This program will take an average of 20-25 teaching hours however some students will require additional hours.

If you would like information on this program, please contact us directly at Bright Start Academy. A meeting will be set up to discuss this program and how we may be able to support
you and your family.
