Education for those with special needs is continually evolving to become more inclusive and foster better overall development. Over the years, special needs education has morphed into one of the most progressive systems of training people in academics, communication, social skills and functional daily living skills. While there has been a lot of progress, things are still changing, and this change is excellent as the future is only going to look brighter.
At Bright Start Academy, we have seen first hand that Ontario is transforming the way children and youth with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), and their families, receive services through the Ontario Autism Program (OAP).
The OAP was put into place by the Ministry of Children and Youth Services, and families began to enter the OAP in June 2017. The vision of the OAP is to give children and youth with ASD access to the timely and effective services they need to achieve their goals at home, at school, in the community, and as they transition into adulthood.
The OAP provides all families of children and youth with ASD with flexible, family-centered services based on each child’s unique needs, by introducing a direct funding option for evidence-based behavioral services, and making program enhancements that will deliver effective services.
If you have chosen to receive services through the direct funding option, your OAP Behaviour Plan will be funded up to a maximum of $55 per hour for evidence-based behavioral services. Your regional provider will issue funding for your behavior plan and can support your family to reconcile payments.
If you want to apply, all you need to do is log on to the government website. You can do so by clicking here – Ontario Ministry of Children and Youth Services.
The most significant impact of the OAP is that it provides families of children with autism financial support to register their children in private, special needs education schools like Bright Start Academy.
Bright Start Academy is Toronto’s premier private school providing academics, life skills, social skills and ABA therapy services for Students across North York, Brampton, Mississauga, Toronto, Markham, Richmond Hill and the surrounding areas.
